Kentucky Housing Corporation Announces HOPWA Funding

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) announces the latest recipients to receive funding from the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program.  Five agencies will receive a combined total of $439,199 to help meet the housing needs of low-income Kentuckians with HIV/AIDS.

The HOPWA program is a federal initiative that provides states and communities with the resources to devise long-term strategies for meeting the housing needs of low-income persons with HIV/AIDS.  HOPWA money can be used to fund a variety of activities including acquisition or construction of housing, emergency rental assistance, operating costs, and supportive services.

"Stable housing is vital for persons living with HIV/AIDS as treatment often requires access to a refrigerator, food, and clean water,” said Richard L. McQuady, chief executive officer of KHC.  “KHC appreciates the efforts of these agencies to provide assistance to these individuals with special needs."

Kentucky Housing distributes HOPWA funds to five regions of Kentucky established by the state’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services.  The regions are Barren River, Cumberland Valley, Lexington, Northern Kentucky and Purchase. Applicants in Boone, Bullitt, Campbell, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Oldham, Pendleton, Shelby and Spencer Counties apply for funding through Cincinnati or Louisville, which run their own programs.

The amount of available funding is based on a formula that uses the number of reported persons living with AIDS in each of the regions.  Citizen input is also sought at annual statewide hearings. An evaluation committee made up of Kentucky Housing’s Specialized Housing Resources Department staff reviews applications.
