Kentucky Housing Waiting List for Section 8 Rental Assistance to Close April 1, 2010

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) has announced that the waiting list for Section 8 Tenant-Based Rental Assistance will close at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010, in 87 Kentucky counties where KHC administers the program.  

Due to the high volume of applications for rental-housing assistance, KHC is forced to close the waiting list to new applicants.  No new applications will be accepted by KHC after Wednesday, March 31, 2010.  The waiting list opened January 1, 2010 after being closed in 2008, when wait exceeded two years. 

Funding for the program is limited and comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, Kentucky Housing administers rent payments to property owners on behalf of the program participants who select a dwelling that meets HUD-housing guidelines.  The housing assistance stays with the participant if they move. 

A list of counties in which Kentucky Housing Corporation administers this program and a pre-application form can be found by clicking on the Rental Assistance link at www.kyhousing.org.  Applicants may also request an application by calling one of Kentucky Housing’s offices.  Residents of eastern Kentucky may call (866) 208-6525.  Residents of western Kentucky may call (866) 855-7317.  Residents of central Kentucky may call (877) 552-7368.  All of these numbers are toll-free in Kentucky.  The TTY number for all areas of the state is 711.

When the waiting list reopens at a future date, announcements will be made in local news media and on KHC's Web site, www.kyhousing.org.
